Need help with Home Theater! (Novice)?
I was given a COBY DVD Home Theater system (http://cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_num_id=344&pcat_id=2004) and I am determined to set it up. I also know it is a piece of crap. That being said I am wondering, do I need to purchase a receiver to make this work or does the dvd player act as a receiver itself. I am at my wits end as I have never hooked up a Home Theater before.
It’s what’s commonly called a “HTIB = Home Theatre in a Box”. That means it has an amplifier/tuner /DVD player in a single box. The speakers attach. In other words, it’s the equivalent (functionally) of a surround sound receiver and DVD player and speakers in one package. It has no auxillary inputs (so you can’t connect anything to it (e.g. XBox)), but it has both audio and video outputs.
Since the DVD player is (probably) connected internally to the receiver portion for audio you only need to select “DVD” as the input (switch on front of reciever) and run a video cable to a TV to watch DVDs. You have a choice of composite (yellow, single RCA) or component (triple RCA red/green/blue). Component is better if your TV handles component input and progressive video, otherwise use composite.
