How can i set my ps3 audio output to 5.1 channel? ?
My PlayStation 3 is connected to a HD LCD TV that is connected to a 5.1 home theater system but the ps only outputs to a 2.0 channel audio as displayed in the audio output settings column! I can’t seem to find a way to change this to 5.1 surround.

How is your PS3 connected to the A/V receiver? HDMI, component cables (red, green, blue cables), composite cables (red, white, yellow cables), or optical cable.
Optical cable is the best way to hook up to get the best sound (if your A/V receiver accepts optical). If your PS3 is hooked up with any other cable other than optical, then you will have to adjust the settings in your A/V receiver (HDMI should automatically choose 5.1, but you will still have to adjust for Linear PCM channels). The A/V receiver can convert the 2 channel into a 5.1 channel. When your PS3 is hooked up with an optical cable, it gives you the choices of what your A/V receiver accepts (Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch., DTS 5.1 Ch., AAC, and 4 different Linear PCM kHz options).
All connections (except optical) send Linear PCM 2 Ch. sound to the A/V receiver. Unless you change the options in the A/V receiver, the sound only comes out of 2 channels (left and right). When using the optical cable, the A/V receiver determines what is the best sound option and automatically picks that (Dolby Digital 5.1, unless DTS 5.1 is available, then it will pick that).
I have my PS3 hooked up with an optical cable (HDMI for video), but I still had to adjust my A/V receiver so I would get 5.1 channels when Linear PCM is being used. You will need to check your A/V receiver owner’s manual to find out how to adjust the sound you want to get.
On my A/V receiver, I can adjust the Linear PCM 2 Ch. to be 2.1 channel (left and right speakers), or convert it to 3.1 channel (left, center, right speakers), 4.1 channel (left, surround left, right, surround right speakers), or 5.1 (which is obviouly all the speakers, and .1 being the sub woofer).
